Relationship mediation

Fortunately, not every difficulty leads to divorce. Often a couple simply needs to be able to say how they see the situation side by side – rather than against each other.

When to consider it

For a specific, well-defined conflict

Sometimes the whole relationship doesn't need rethinking – the parties simply cannot find common ground on a single issue. In such cases mediation does not aim to reshape the relationship as a whole, but to help them talk about this one topic differently than before and reach a decision.

When the relationship has worn down, but can still be saved

It can equally help when everyday life has gone flat and the relationship has been drifting downhill for a while, but the couple would still like to stay together and are ready to work for it.

Most relationship difficulties are typical: many couples struggle with the same sticking points, and plenty of proven ideas already exist for solving them. So there is no reason to give up or despair – but it is worth dealing with problems in good time, before they grow into something bigger. In the best case, by the end of the process the couple has relearned how to listen to and understand each other.

How it works

Because this is a process, and change takes time, patience is needed too: a relationship does not turn around overnight. That is why relationship mediation is also somewhat longer: it typically lasts about three months, with one session every two weeks, so that couples also have time to practise what has been discussed.

Mediation or couples therapy

The two paths answer different questions, and they do not exclude each other.

Relationship mediation

A time-limited, focused process: it uncovers the difficulties, but does not dig as deep as psychological work. It is not concerned with analysing the past; with a practical approach, it concentrates on the present and the future.

Couples therapy

A longer, deeper process that examines the relationship as a whole, recurring patterns and their roots. It is truly useful when there is both the possibility and the intention for this deeper, more time-consuming work.

The two can also work well together: a specific question clarified in mediation is sometimes exactly the step that makes the later therapeutic work go more easily.
